Sennheiser ACCENTUM Plus Wireless

The ACCENTUM Plus is Sennheiser’s mid-range noise-cancelling headphone. It uses the same frame as the ACCENTUM Wireless and adds adaptive hybrid ANC, touch controls on the right earcup, aptX Adaptive, auto-pause when removed, a carry case and a 3.5 mm cable. Sennheiser rates it for 50 hours of playback with ANC on. Testing found the battery, connection and ANC consistent; the sound was balanced but light on bass. The most common owner complaint is that the earcups feel tight on larger ears or heads.

Sony ULT WEAR (WH-ULT900N)

ULT WEAR is Sony’s bass-focused noise-cancelling over-ear headphone. It offers a 40 mm driver, a one-button ULT bass mode, ANC with the Integrated Processor V1, LDAC, connection to two devices at once and up to 30 hours of battery with ANC on. Owners like the bass, noise cancelling and battery life; some criticise call quality and mids being swamped at the highest bass setting. Sony acknowledges that a crack can form at the headband joint on specific serial numbers and offers free repair until 31 January 2027.

Sony WH-CH720N

The WH-CH720N is Sony’s entry-to-mid-range noise-cancelling over-ear headphone. It offers ANC with the Integrated Processor V1 and Dual Noise Sensor, a 30 mm driver, Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC/AAC, simultaneous connection to two devices and wired use over 3.5 mm; battery life is up to 35 hours with ANC on and 50 hours off. The WH-1000XM5 is Sony’s over-ear wireless noise-cancelling headphone released in 2022: two processors (QN1 and V1) manage eight microphones, it uses 30 mm drivers and supports LDAC. It runs 30 hours with noise cancelling on, gives 3 hours of playback from a 3-minute charge and weighs 250 g. Owners praise comfort, noise cancelling and battery life; the non-folding design, an over-sensitive Speak-to-Chat feature and the price are frequent criticisms. On Sony communities some owners report that the left hinge or the headband joint broke and was treated as out of warranty.

Apple AirPods Max (Lightning, 2020)

AirPods Max are Apple’s first over-ear wireless headphones. They have aluminium ear cups, a mesh canopy headband, an H1 chip in each cup, active noise cancellation with nine microphones and a Digital Crown borrowed from the Apple Watch. Testing placed the sound and noise cancellation among the best in class and criticised the weight, the lack of a 3.5 mm input and limited features on Android. Owners have reported condensation inside the ear cups for years.

Independent testing found noise cancelling on par with the Bose 700, the sound full and comfort good over an eight-hour day, but criticised touch controls that skip tracks by accident. Owners praise the sound and comfort; some say it takes time to get used to the ANC pressure and that the mic struggles in noisy places.
