Dolby Vision

Dolby’s HDR format that uses dynamic metadata to adapt the picture scene by scene to each display’s capabilities.

Dolby introduced Dolby Vision in January 2014 to bring high dynamic range (HDR) and wide colour gamut to homes. In Dolby’s description, the format unlocks the full potential of HDR by dynamically optimising picture quality for the service, device and platform in use.

Displays differ in peak brightness, contrast and colour capability. Dolby Vision displays map the full-range signal to each panel’s limits through a process called display management. This uses metadata describing the display the content was mastered on (SMPTE ST 2086) and dynamic information about the content itself (SMPTE ST 2094); the video signal is encoded with the PQ curve (SMPTE ST 2084).

For films and series this metadata is created during colour grading, and the director can adjust the automatic mapping with "trims"; in live production the metadata is generated algorithmically at transmission encoding. According to Dolby, this dynamic metadata helps deliver accurate HDR even on mass-market edge-lit TVs. To benefit fully, the content, the player and the display all need Dolby Vision support.
