Technology glossary

Display Stream Compression (DSC)

A low-latency compression scheme defined by VESA that reduces the data carried over a display link.

DSC is lossy; VESA defines its target as “visually lossless”, meaning a viewer cannot tell when compression is active. It is not mathematically lossless.

It runs at a constant bit rate and enables modes such as high-refresh 4K that would exceed a cable’s raw bandwidth. For typical uses VESA recommends at least 8 bits per pixel for 4:4:4 video. Both the source (graphics card) and the display must support DSC.
