Wi‑Fi 6 (802.11ax)

The Wi‑Fi generation introduced by the Wi‑Fi Alliance in 2018 that improves capacity and power efficiency on busy networks.

According to the Wi‑Fi Alliance, Wi‑Fi 6 brings higher data rates, more capacity and better performance in places with many devices. Its technical name is IEEE 802.11ax.

OFDMA shares a channel among several devices at once, raising network efficiency and lowering latency. Multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) lets an access point send data to several devices at the same time.

1024-QAM encodes more data in the same amount of spectrum; 160 MHz channel support increases bandwidth; transmit beamforming delivers higher data rates at a given range.

Target wake time (TWT) schedules when a device wakes to send or receive data, which extends battery life. That matters for phones, watches and smart-home devices.

Wi‑Fi 6 works in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands; devices that bring the same features to the 6 GHz band are called Wi‑Fi 6E. Real-world speed depends on the router also supporting Wi‑Fi 6, the number of antennas and the environment.
