Technology glossary

LDAC

Sony’s codec for sending audio over Bluetooth. Both the source device and the headphones must support it.

Higher bitrates carry more audio data, but interference can cause interruptions. High-resolution support does not mean every connection is lossless.

The headset’s connection mode matters too. Liberty 5 Pro cannot use LDAC with three devices connected, and its specified runtime decreases when ANC and LDAC are enabled together.

It runs 30 hours with noise cancelling on, gives 3 hours of playback from a 3-minute charge and weighs 250 g. Owners praise comfort, noise cancelling and battery life; the non-folding design, an over-sensitive Speak-to-Chat feature and the price are frequent criticisms. On Sony communities some owners report that the left hinge or the headband joint broke and was treated as out of warranty.
